Tributes Pour In For Jana Novotna, Former Wimbledon Ladies Champion

Sadly, at only 49, Czech tennis champion, Jana Novotna  has passed away( after a battle against Cancer.)

Peacefully,  surrounded by family and friends, Jana will be remembered for her stellar success as singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, champion. In 1998 Novotna defeated Nathalie Tauziat to win Wimbledon.

More famously, perhaps, she stole hearts all over the world, when, in 1993, she lost to German champion, Steffi Graf.

Miss Novotna had been in a position to take the third set, and win the championship when her game crumbled. Very, very badly. She lost five games in a row, and Miss Graf cruised to victory.

Upon receiving her runner-up trophy, Jana promptly burst into tears and was comforted by the Duchess of Kent. A moment of heartbreak everyone can relate to.

Hearts broke for her as she sobbed on the Duchess’ shoulder, unable to contain her disappointment. The Duchess comforted her, told her she would do it, and – she did. Novotna’s star will shine on, above Centre Court, eternally.

Olympic Weightlifter Puts Gold Medal Up For Auction For Iran Quake Victims

A deadly 7.3 magnitude earthquake recently rocked the border area between Iraq and Iran. This earthquake was the biggest of the year and was felt as far away as Pakistan and Turkey.

Thousands of people were injured in the quake and it destroyed hundreds of villages.

Kianoush Rostami, Olympic weightlifting champion, will be auctioning his gold medal to raise money for the victims. He won the medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

He considers this as a small step towards helping his countrymen who are suffering as a result of this devastating earthquake. He feels as if the medal belongs to them anyway.

According to Tasnim (Iran’s semi-official news agency), various sports celebrities and top athletes will gather at the Shiroudi stadium in Tehran to raise money for the victims of the earthquake.

On Wednesday, France won against Ireland and South Africa. The countries bid against each other to determine who will host the Rugby World Cup in the year 2023.

Many expected South Africa to win, so this result came as a surprise. World Rugby announced the country as a “clear leader.” This is the international governing body of the sport.

But now, France is set to host the 10th edition of the sport’s most prominent competition. After the preliminary voting round in London, Ireland was already eliminated.

Then France won against South Africa in the next round. The World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont congratulated the victorious nation.

Apparently, the country gave a very powerful and thorough bid. It resounded clearly with the entire Council, which is why they won. France will be very busy for a while.

This is because Paris will host the Summer Olympics in 2022, a year before the Rugby World Cup.
